Distinguished and Famous people from Ararat Rural City
The Ararat district's notable connections include a railway worker whose botanical paintings travelled the world and a cyclist who reached five Olympic Games. Their achievements grew from very different kinds of close attention: the details of a leaf and the fractions of a second on a track.
🎨 Stan Kelly
Stan Kelly worked as an engine driver in Ararat and painted plants at home on a small table. His studies of eucalypts developed into important botanical references, including Australian Eucalypts in Colour and the two-volume Eucalypts. He also taught painting locally. More than 500 of his watercolours entered the National Herbarium of Victoria's collection, and some were later adapted for Australian passports. His pictures consequently accompanied travellers much farther than his own railway routes.
🚴 Shane Kelly
Track cyclist Shane Kelly was born in Ararat in 1972 and competed at every Olympics from Barcelona in 1992 to Beijing in 2008. His medals included silver in the kilometre time trial at Barcelona, bronze in the same event at Sydney and keirin bronze at Athens. His club affiliation with Stawell/Great Western places his early sporting connections in the surrounding district. Across five Games, he remained competitive in events where a moment's hesitation can settle the result.
